Waste disposal and recycling
In Zürich, it is required to purchase official bin bags to dispose of your household trash. You will find some in the apartment (they are blue or white). You can purchase them in all supermarkets (they are usually not out on the shelves so make sure to ask at the cashier's desk for "Kehrichtsack").
The household trash has to be disposed of in the right container, which can be found in front of the house in Hurdäckerstrasse 11 (as shown in the first picture - just walk down the street and you will see it on the right).
These bags are NOT for recyclables. Compost, PET bottles, glass, cardboard, paper, aluminum cans, batteries, and other toxic waste are disposed of separately from household garbage. There is a recycling point for Glass and aluminum in front of the house.
Full bin bags are not picked up from the street. They must be placed in designated neighborhood containers.
If the garbage is not disposed of correctly, it will not be picked up and you will receive a fine of 300.- CHF!
Recycling
Glass and aluminum need to be separated and then deposited at local recycling points.
The closest recycling point to the flat is located right in front of the house (see picture above).
Plastic bottles (PET) can be dropped off in the large containers in front or inside of supermarkets (Coop).
Cardboard and paper are picked up for free in front of your house every 2 weeks on Friday (see dates HERE – "Karton" is Cardboard, "Papier" is paper).
Cardboard and paper must be folded correctly:
